Names of God Christmas Advent Cards Countdown Calendar

Is it already that time of year again? Is Christmas really just months away? We are entering my favorite time of year, August to December! I love the holiday season and all of the beauty it brings. The first changes of fall with the crisp mornings and the color changing leaves to the turning of the seasons with frost on the ground and little flakes of snow coming down calling out that Christmas is near. We love to put the Christmas tree up the first week of November and then listen to those first songs of Christmas…with my pumpkin spice coffee of course. The snow falling softly and the sound of the wood stove crackling in the evening and a good ol’ Christmas movie really brings in the season. For us though, that’s not all this season is.
The Real Reason We Celebrate
I love taking the time and really cherishing the real reason for the season. I want to show my kids who their savior is. What a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus! Now, I am fully aware that Christmas is not the actual birthday of Jesus, however, it is the day we celebrate his birth. We also enjoy putting the wise men from our nativity somewhere else in the room away from our nativity as a fun tradition with the kids because we believe they didn’t meet Jesus until he was closer a little older. We do many traditions like the Shepherd on the Search, going and looking at Christmas lights, baking cookies, opening a book a day, a small nativity scene where we bring out each character with scripture and place them around the nativity, and an advent calendar.
What is an Advent Calendar?
An Advent calendar serves as a countdown to Christmas, typically starting on December 1st and leading up to Christmas Day. Each day, a door or window is opened to reveal a small gift, treat, or message, creating a sense of anticipation and excitement. The tradition is rooted in the Christian practice of preparing for the celebration of Jesus’ birth, but it has also become a fun and festive way for people of all ages to enjoy the holiday season.

Christmas Advent Cards
That’s right, it’s advent season. We have used many over the years but none that I truly thought captured the season for celebrating Jesus. I wanted to come up with a devotional card set that counts down the days until Christmas by using a daily Bible verse. Each day has a name of God with an accompanied piece of scripture. We love using these every year and incorporating them into our home and homeschool. If you start on December 1st, you’ll end on Christmas Day! These advent cards can be used as a time of anticipation and reflection. A time to pray and be thankful for all that the Lord has done for us and to celebrate his birth. They are also a great educational piece!
Unlike traditional advent calendars, there is no toy or gift that comes with them, but instead you can hang the cards on your wall or set them up on a card holder and turn each one over day by day. Card advent calendars can be a fun alternative to the festive season. The singular focus on these cards is God. Your kids will dive deeper and learn about the various names that He is called while reading God’s word. You can include these into your morning devotionals or add them to your bedtime routine.
These particular cards you can hang on wall with clothes pins or place them into a card holder. I used a cellphone holder in the picture below.

Other fun traditions other than Christmas advent cards:
Christmas Book Advent
Wrap up a Christmas book for each day you want to do the advent for. Unwrap a book a day until Christmas and enjoy reading it with your family. For added fun, use kraft paper and let the kids decorate each one!

Shepherd on the Search
This is a fun alternative to Elf on the Shelf. We love making the shepherd do something fun each night and then leave a note about the nativity story to read each day before Christmas. On Christmas we like to have him sitting at the nativity scene for when the kids wake up. My kids know he’s not real but they love waking up to see what he’s doing each morning.

Baking
Need I say more? Cookies, pies, and all of the holiday baking fun.

Gingerbread Houses
Sometimes we do a combined one and other times we do our own. It’s always a fun time!

Christmas parades and driving around to see the lights
We love to go out and drive around to see the lights. We also try to catch a festival of lights parade or two as well.

Walk Through Bethlehem
In a neighboring town from us, they do a Walk Through Bethlehem. We move through different rooms as actives tell a story. In the end, there is a big room where they make it look like Bethlehem with food and farm animals.
If you don’t have any traditions set in place yet for your family, I highly encourage it. The kids look forward to them each year and it’s a great way to connect and celebrate the season. What kind of traditions do you have? Let me know in the comments!
