How To Make A Story From Pictures For Creative Storytelling

Creative Writing For Kids

Welcome to a world of storytelling!   My kids love a good story, but when it comes to writing, my oldest would rather be reading a book. I created
these cards as a great way to implement creative writing time into our homeschool. My kids have loved taking turns choosing their cards and creating a fun short story.  I have watched their story ideas broaden and become easier to develop.  In my opinion, it has been an easy way to help guide them in the direction of creating a full story.

According to good old google, creative writing is an art form. Story creation opens up the artistic world where kids can create unique stories with their own personal touch. These cards are a powerful tool to help kids create their own story and overcome writer’s block. There are so many different ways to use these cards and build confidence and an open mind in our children with their storytelling. Before I mention how these cards can be used, I should mention that the images below have been created with AI. We have enjoyed using AI in our home to help create an image for a story that we have created.  My kids have enjoyed seeing their ideas come to life from a single image even though it’s a glimpse of the entire story.
Though there are other ways to make stories from pictures using ai story generators, or photo story projects using photography, these cards do not require you to have access to the internet or use digital cameras.  All you need are the cards and an imagination!

So how do you make a story from pictures with these create a story cards? Here are just a handful of options below.

1. Choose 3 cards, one from each category (item, house, character).  Using those 3 cards, write a story however you want or say it out loud. Add any extra cards you want to tell the story! You are the story creator!

Example: The cards below are magic mirror, ogre and cave. Let’s also add in underwater castle (not pictured). I created an AI image for fun to show the plot of the story.

Brogg the friendly ogre spent his days in his cave longing for something more. One day, as he was exploring deep into his cave, he found a magical mirror…

Inside the mirror was an underwater world…He couldn’t wait to step inside!

2. Play with family or friends!

Take turns telling your own stories or choose cards and combine one big story! What story will you tell or what will the group come up with?

In a twisted tale, the dragon comes to save the princess but when he arrives, no one is there! Instead, he finds a message in a bottle, it’s pirates…

3. Add two of one category…or more!

There are three categories for these cards. Mix it up and pull two characters or two houses or three items! There are so many options.

Lyla left the house for the day thinking it would be as normal as any other day. Oh, but it wasn’t. While she was gone, a fairy rode in on the most beautiful unicorn and made her old dollhouse something wonderful…

4. Can you challenge yourself and make one big story with all of the cards? It would be pretty funny trying to figure out how a unicorn and a pirate can end up in the same fairy tale, or what a snake can do with a feather. What story will you come up with?

5. Choose your cards and then set a theme for the story. Is it going to be happy, funny, sad, set in the 1800s or deep in enchanted forest? Let’s do an example of a mermaid, cave and magic wand, with a “majestic” theme (given to me by my kids).

A mermaid who spent her days collecting gems and storing them in her cave of wonders, finds a magical wand hidden beneath a pile of gems. She picks up the wand and gives it a quick wave in the air…

So why is creative writing so important? Creative writing cultivates critical thinking skills and enhances communication. Creative writing plays a crucial role in fostering academic and creative growth and personal development.

And what about storytelling? Why is that important for children? Storytelling, like creative writing, brings out imagination and creativity. It is good for language development, critical thinking, bonding and communication and so many other good skills.

So what are you waiting for? What story will you write or tell?
