Spell Your Name Workout Challenge Activity For Kids
Teaching homeschool physical education can be a real challenge. As a former physical education teacher, I get asked a lot how I incorporate it into my homeschool and to be honest, I struggle myself! It can be hard to make a plan when you are unsure of what to do. My goal is to create fitness curriculum for homeschoolers. While doing this, it sometimes also falls along the realm of brain break activities for classrooms. The spell your name workout is a really fun one for the kids and a great way to get them up and moving with a simple fitness challenge. Students will need to know basic exercises like jumping jacks, arm circles, squats, calf raises, and push ups. This one I created below is a bundle of a few other fitness challenges that your kids or students will enjoy.
You can find our Spell Your Name Workout below:
So how does Spell Your Name Workout work?
Each letter of the alphabet is assigned different exercises. You can either just do your first name, or if it is a short name, add your last name too. With each letter of your name, you will perform the exercise next to your letter. Do each exercise until you have spelled your name! That’s it! A fun way to do an easy workout.
Can I create my own Spell Your Name Workout?
Absolutely! Just assign an exercise to each letter and you’re good to go! For older kids, you can add in high knees, tricep dips, Russian twists, basic plank or even make the workout longer and add in a mile run or a full upper body workout.
I have made it a goal to try and do more with my kids at home for fitness. It’s quite easy after having 4 kids to to find the motivation to get up and be active again. This is a great full workout that only takes 5-10 minutes.
Variations of the Spell Your Name Workout
Spell your name
This one is pretty simple, choose your first, last or full name and do the exercises.
Practice your spelling words
Make learning how to spell fun! Get your spelling list out and practice your words through exercises. Choose one word a day or get a good workout in and practice them all!
Spell a friends or a pets name
Change up the workout by spelling different names!
Play “guess the word” with a friend
Choose a word but don’t tell your friend. Have them observe you doing the workout to try and figure out each letter to solve the mystery! Take turns choosing the word and being the guesser.
Brain Breaks Bundle
This bundle was intended to be a great brain break for kids in a classroom setting or for homeschool Physical Education. The bundle also has Roll-A-Die activates and a fitness board game. Hand them up as a poster and let the kids enjoy and be led on what to do.

What is a Roll-A-Die Workout?
Get a 6 sided die and roll it. Find the number on the poster and do the exercise next to it. That’s it! Very simply and no difficult directions needed. This is an excellent choice for a quick movement brain break activity or a warm up.
What is the Fitness Challenge Game Board?
Either use this as a poster or laminate and use as a board. Roll the die and move the amount of spaces. Use any small object for the game pieces or just your finger and remember where you left off. Perform the exercise on that spot and then roll again. Keep doing the exercises until you reach finish.
Why is Homeschool Physical Education important?
It is really good to set kids up with a love for fitness. Exercise improves improves cardiovascular health, enhances muscle and bone strength, increases flexibility and balance and boosts the immune system. It can also reduce stress and give us more energy. It doesn’t take much give our kids a great workout, especially now that we have easy access to educational resources online readily available.
If you are struggling to come up with other ideas for physical education, I will be continuing to make more posts. Below are some ideas that I already have created print outs for. The biggest thing is to have fun with it! Let them enjoy being active so that they develop a love for it later on.
